You know you need to change how you work. You've heard the word "AI" so many times this year you could scream. And somewhere between the LinkedIn hype and the "10x your business overnight" ads, you've quietly decided it's probably not for you, or not yet, or not until you've got more time to figure it out.
Sound familiar? Good. You're exactly who this post is for.
I'm Rebecca Cooper, Business Transformation Consultant, AI Adoption Specialist and Leadership Coach at Elevatus Coaching. I've spent 20+ years in HR, recruitment and business change, I'm Anthropic AI Fluency certified, and I'm an approved Help to Grow mentor. Which is a fancy way of saying: I've done the training, I've sat with real business owners while they figure this out, and I'm not going to sell you a "transformation journey" with a PDF at the end of it.
What "AI adoption" actually means (and what it doesn't)
Let's clear something up straight away. AI adoption doesn't mean robots on your shop floor, an app that runs your business for you, or handing your judgement over to a machine.
It's not about replacing you
It's the opposite, actually. Done properly, AI adoption is about protecting the bits of your business only you can do, the relationships, the decisions, the instinct you've built over years, by taking the repetitive, energy-draining admin off your plate.
It's about buying back time
Think of the last email you drafted three times before sending. The report you rewrote at 9pm. The proposal you copy-pasted from an old one and tweaked for two hours. That's the stuff AI can help with. Not your business. Your drag.
Why this matters right now
This isn't a "someday" conversation any more. According to the British Chambers of Commerce's 2026 survey, over half of UK firms are now actively using AI, up from around a quarter just two years ago. And firms already using it are reporting strong productivity gains, while those with no plans to adopt are, unsurprisingly, expecting none.
But here's the honest bit that most consultancies won't tell you: the same research shows the number one barrier isn't cost or technology. It's confidence, not skills. Nearly half of small firms say they simply don't feel they know enough to get started. And I get it. Half of what's out there is written in such fancy words and tech speak that it would put anyone off, me included, and I'm supposed to be the expert. That's not a "you" problem. That's an industry that's done a rubbish job of explaining this in plain English.
Where the big consultancies get it wrong for businesses like yours
Big tech consultancies are brilliant at glossy strategy decks and big, clever-sounding language. They're less brilliant at understanding what it's actually like to run a 12-person business where you're doing the strategy, the sales calls and the school run in the same afternoon.
You don't need an "AI transformation roadmap" with six phases and a steering committee, or a conversation full of words you'd need to Google afterwards. You need to know: which three tasks in your week could disappear tomorrow, which tool actually does that safely, and how to explain it to your team without anyone panicking about their job.
That's a very different conversation, and it's the one I have with clients.
Three places most SME owners actually start
In practice, this is rarely complicated. The businesses I work with usually find their first wins in:
- Written communication — proposals, follow-ups, job descriptions, policies. First drafts in minutes, not hours.
- Meeting and admin overhead — notes, summaries, and turning a rambly voice memo into something you can actually act on.
- Customer-facing content — social posts, FAQs, onboarding emails, the stuff that's important but never urgent enough to get done properly.
None of these need a developer. None of these need a six-figure budget. They need someone showing you, in your own language, how to do it properly and safely, GDPR, data protection and all.
If you want to see how I structure this for businesses, I've laid it all out on my AI Adoption page.
You don't have to figure this out on your own
You didn't build your business by waiting until you felt 100% ready, you learned as you went, with the right people around you. This is no different. The businesses getting ahead right now aren't the ones with the biggest budgets. They're the ones who started small, with someone who could translate the jargon into "here's what to do on Tuesday."
If you're curious what this could actually look like for your business, not a generic playbook, but a look at where your time is genuinely leaking, I'd love to talk it through.
I offer a free, no-pressure Business Productivity Review, where we look at your week and find the first practical win together. No slides, no sales pitch, just an honest conversation.
